2nd Triennial National
General Council of Pakistan Workers Federation was held on 22nd
July, 2008 at Bukhtiar Labour Hall, Lahore under the
Presidentship of Mr. Muhammad Ahmad, Chairman of the Federation
which was participated by larger number of elected members of
the General Council of the eight Regional Centers of the
Federation from all over the country having membership of 0.88
million workers both in public and private sectors.
At this occasion, the
Federation received fraternal messages from various national and
international trade union centers including Mr. Juan Somavia,
Director General, International Labour Organization, Geneva
which was read over in the inaugural session of the Conference
by Mr. Donglin Li, Director, ILO Area Office Islamabad.
The Federation also
received fraternal message from Mr. Guy Ryder, General
Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation on behalf of
168 million workers in 155 countries of the world conveying
goodwill to the working class of Pakistan and assuring their
continuous support for welfare of the workers and achieving the
economic and social progress of the country. Copies of these
messages are enclosed as Annex-A and Annex-B for your kind
perusal.
This session of the
Conference was also addressed by Mr. Noriyuki Suzuki, General
Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation - Asia
Pacific and Mr. Donglin Li, Director, ILO Area Office, Islamabad
as special guests. The General Secretary of the Federation
presented a detailed report about the activities of the
Federation during the period which is enclosed as Annex-C. The
enclosed resolutions (Annex-D) were adopted by the session.
These resolutions pertains
to the demands of the workers and their welfare urging the
Government to tackle the problem of abject poverty and
aggravating unemployment, need for promoting the Decent Work and
respect of fundamental rights of the workers, overall
requirement of adoption the policy of "National Economic Self
Reliance" in the country for promoting national industries and
agriculture and imposing ban on import of those foreign
manufactured goods including Buses and Automobiles which are
being manufactured in Pakistan, need for abolishing of abuse of
child labour and bonded labour and feudalism and discrimination
against women, developing human capital and prevention of
accidents and occupational diseases of the workers and promotion
of Safer Work, need for taking emergent measures for raising
cheaper electricity through wind, Hydel and Coal production in
order to make our industries and agriculture competitive in
phase of globalization of economy, free trade and rapid
technological development, resolving the just demands of PTCL,
CDA and WAPDA workers through dialogue and saving the textile
industry from closure resulting mass unemployment of the workers
and repeal of Section 27-B of Banking Companies Ordinance and
amendment of Industrial Relations Ordinance, 2002 and President
Special Powers for Removal from Service Ordinance in conformity
with ILO Conventions Nos.87 and 98 ratified by the Government of
Pakistan and enforcement of Labour laws in conformity with ILO
Convention No.81 and repeal PEMRA Ordinance and reinstatement of
deposed judges. |
